Location : Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
This is nuts. Right about the same time last year, I remember I had to attend 3 weddings and a funeral in the space of one month. I am at a time in my life where I see my friends, one by one, getting married and settling down to the age old mindset of raising a family. It's like watching flies one by one getting caught in a spider web. After the marriage, it's the big house, a big car, a big family, big debts(knock on wood) and maybe a big wife too? So anyway, I'm back in the city to attend the wedding dinner of Margaret, an old mate of mine from the days of old. It was a time when...don't laugh...we all thought we could be rock stars - kept my hair long, picked up playing the guitar, joined a band, screamed to the top of my lungs in the shower because I wanted to sing like Chris Cornell. Then one day I woke up and thought....what the heck have I been doing the past few years? I'm living in MALAYSIA. I will never be the catalyst for the next grunge revolution. I will never make millions and have groupies hanging around me. I will never sign autographs that will make people rich. So, I cut my hair and became a yuppie instead. Somewhere along the line I picked up surfing, became a university student and I am now an avid traveller. Still surfing whenever I can.
Well anyway, Margaret's wedding was like most events where I make an effort to attend nowadays - a great reunion where all my mates from the old times get together and talk shit. Most of them were people from pictures you can see in the Photo Album > Malaysia > Golden Oldies. They are all mates I've known for about 10 years. I wish Gerald(bridegroom) and Margaret(bride) a great time growing old together. Speaking of pictures, the photographs from the wedding will be uploaded later when I am able to crop and upload it.
I've managed to miss a couple of weddings thanks to the fact that I'm quite often away. I get mixed feelings whenever I'm attending a wedding because it makes me feel uncomfortable and kinda out of place despite being happy for the couple and all. I'm nowhere near getting hitched because I'm still swinging and loving it. Although sometimes I miss being in love, I dread the mind games, dependency, emotional roller coasters that comes as part of the package. So in a way, weddings are a scary event for me but I've got to be there because it's well, a special event and blah blah blah. Moreover, if I ever live till I'm old, gray and unwanted, I can always mail order a bride... =)
I hope someday I'll be invited to a wedding that's extraordinary. One that is not held in a hotel*. One that doesn't involve a hundred thousand people I don't know but just a small clique of close-knit friends. A wedding that has the bridegroom and bride throwing plates at each other. Ok, maybe leave that last one out. =)
There's another 2 weddings coming up in December but I'm not sure I'll be able to attend because I'm contemplating Sri Lanka as my next destination. That depends on the outcome of the UK working holiday visa application. There's still no news from the British High Commission. I wonder what's cooking.
Anyway, I've just returned from the wedding and I'm going back up to Cherating after this post because the surf is going to pump the next few days and I am going to be there by hook or by crook! WOOooOOOooHooOOOooo......
Other wishes :
To my brother who lives in Sydney, Adrian, Happy Birthday old man.
To readers living in the west, Happy Halloween, if it was ever meant to be happy!
*Hotels in Malaysia provide an easy package for couples getting hitched where they plan and execute the whole event so most couples choose this option.
Posted by Ripcord at October 31, 2004 03:57 AMHey there! I haven't been to your site in so long..since like......okay too long lol. Anyways, well that was pretty mature of you. I'm still in the days of thinking I can do whatever. Cassie = first U.S. woman president..lmfao. Yeah. Lol but anyways ghs. Your such a interesting person..I love reading your blogs because..you go to places over there where I'll..probably. never be. It's interesting to hear about everything over there. But anyways, take care!
Posted by: Cassie at October 31, 2004 12:44 PMI have the same feelings as you about weddings. The worst part when people come and try to impose their "married life" to you. They will be like, "When is your turn?", "Why are you not married yet" and the works. If it wasn't a public place, I would be punching these guys' faces.
Posted by: grease-bar at November 1, 2004 08:13 AMCherating, a place I will never forget. Used to be a Cherating beach boy. Was there like almost every weekend. But that is like almost ten years ago. Time is flying, damn!
Posted by: grease-bar at November 1, 2004 08:16 AMWhy didnt ppl come out with special kind of wedding dinner...
the dinner where....you will be served
1) beansprout salted fish
2) claypot beancurd
3) sweet & sour pork
4) steamed asam fish
5) preserved vegetable soup
then it will be a truly special one-of-a-kind wedding dinner that will be the talk of the town for multiple centuries!
I once went to a wedding that served Kari Kepala Ikan and Sambal Terung. Even the caterer was confused, and he asked me whether this was a wedding or something else.
Posted by: grease-bar at November 1, 2004 11:04 AMi can never understand why people just can't save the moolah they throw on wedding banquets and go for a super uberlicious 10 star honeymoon?

Posted by: Roger Hew at November 1, 2004 08:09 PMcassie : heyyyy welcome back sweetie! if you are the first US woman president, that would knock my socks off for real!
grease-bar : try not to punch laaa. just look through them as if they were invisible and you are deaf. for me, most of the time they get the message. if they still pester, then kick their teeth in.
zbjernak : pork at a wedding? i dunno about that... but that selection sure made me hungry.
erinnys : because their parents have to invite their multitude of friends at your expense! haha..
roger : where have u been all this while! i see you came around to advertise rush again huh? =) (Roger is the General Manager of Rush, a club). I am definitely interested in the waterfall trips but i'm disappointed u didn't get me to go to lata kinjang. i'm just a phone call away, dude.
Posted by: Ripcord at November 1, 2004 08:15 PMhey =)
Don't take the wedding part that hard! I think marrige is a very stupid thing actually! of course it's nice to get the monney when your man dies *evil laugh* But other than that; Neh!
And where does that stupid myth that all girls wants to get married in a white weddingdress, have a big car, a big house and a big family. And then later (like you said) become big wifes! At lest I don't dream about this. maby I'm the unnormal person here =/ happy halloween!
PS: Maby I'll dress up as a Big bride for halloween =P haha.
My real name IS Aurora... I'm just not a god lol
I always cry at weddings and would avoid them if I could get away with it. And alot of friends aren't married so much as they have children... sometimes more than one... it's crazy to me.
And my halloween was very happy until this morning when we had to leave(I was in Las Vegas)and fly back home... I didn't want to come home:(
Posted by: Aurora at November 2, 2004 05:29 AMit's a little ironic that you need a piece of paper to prove your love to that ONE person?
ripcord: don't start with that 'responsibility' crap like u did when we were talking at Alamanda. a piece of paper is a piece of paper is a piece of paper...
so, when's yours? -*wink|wink|wink*-
love, jin
