Tsunami

Location : Cherating, Malaysia.

I was logging on to wish you guys a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year because I forgot to do that in my last post. But now that would sound odd because a tidal wave just hit South East Asia affecting most countries fringed by the Indian Ocean. A tsunami is a very large ocean wave cause by an undersea earthquake or volcanic eruption. It can measure up to a hundred feet tall. Malaysian casualties are not too bad(43 dead so far) compared to the other affected countries but most of us have friends who are in and around the affected region. I hope people I know in Phuket, Thailand, are ok. A friend's cousins were on holiday in Phuket when the tidal wave hit. She can't contact them and she's so worried now. I have a friend from Cherating who is holidaying in Koh Phi Phi, also Thailand, where 200 have died. No news from him yet. And I have 2 Japanese friends who are surfing in Sri Lanka where more than 2000 have died. Most of all, I have an old friend by the name of J.D. who is working on an offshore oil platform in eastern India. He's the dude in the top right picture in this post. I really pray and hope he's ok.

My Mom sent me an sms message asking me to stop surfing. =) And lots of friends sent me text messages to see if I was affected in any way while surfing in Cherating. It's ironic how excited us surfers in Cherating would get whenever we hear of a hurricane in the Philippines because it would send swells over to our coastline. But in actual fact, the last hurricane in the Philippines killed 500 people. This natural disaster is so much closer and it's affecting people I know.

Surf's up!

Err, on a more sober note, I do have a Danish friend who was supposed to be on her way to Phi Phi. But I think she's was still in Bangkok when the waves hit the island. I think.

Hi, I an ozzy living in Singapore. I hope to get up to Cherating this weekend. Let me know how is the surf now please. I am gonna drive but I only have 3 days so it will be a bit rushed but I have not surfed since September so I am pretty keen. Im in agnoy today after wake boarding the first time last Sunday must have pulled every muscle in my arm and back. Do you have any more good photos of the surf in Cherating.

Do you think I should book some accomodation in Cherating for this weekend or do you think it will be easy enough to find when I get there Friday 31-dec.

Cheers, Adam
