Always Back Up

Location : Cherating, Malaysia.

One year ago, I lost my mobile phone in Ikea. Along with the phone, I lost all the phone numbers of mates I collected from a couple of countries. I was gutted because the numbers were irreplaceable, some friends were forever gone and I lost some sleep over it. I was determined to never lose my phone numbers again and after sulking for a few months, I started shopping around for a used phone with Bluetooth capabilities. With Bluetooth on your phone, you will not be too lazy to back up the phone numbers on your phone because instead of looking for pen and paper to copy hundreds of phone numbers by hand, all that is needed is a couple of clicks on your mouse and it's done - the whole phone book is backed up on your computer. The computer must also be Bluetooth enabled.

Well my friends, the effort has paid off. My SIM card was *stolen today and I'm so happy I regularly backed my phone book. I beat the odds!!! It was a prepaid(pay-as-you-go) SIM card so I lost quite a bit of credit in it but fuck that, money can be replaced almost anytime. Not the phone numbers. Having learned from my past mistake, I'm proud to say this time I have them all backed up on my computer. If the hard disk on my computer crashed this very moment, wouldn't that sound like it was plucked straight out of a movie? =) Of course, it would be better if nothing was stolen. I hope the thief gets a fair share of misfortune, if not more. I've learnt my lessons the hard way when dealing with the digital age because not backing up data can lead to quite a bit of heartache, anger, self-destruction and insomnia. Besides not backing up the phone numbers I lost in Ikea, I've also once lost this website which wasn't backed up. All the entries I posted could never ever be replaced but in the end, I managed to get it all back. Read the whole story here.

Listen up people!!! Back up your phone numbers now! Back up your blog entries now! Don't be a lazy prick. Back up everything important in your life - your emails, your work documents, your surfboard, etc. Try your best to always have a backup plan. Can't get it up? Make sure Viagra is not too far away! Girlfriend going away on holiday? Have a blow up doll at hand! Mobile phone stolen? Steal someone else's!

Don't say I never warned ya!

*Lent my SIM card to a friend temporarily and her mobile phone was stolen.

Note : Let it be known that my Digi mobile number +60163614543 is now permanently out of commission. I am using my other 017 number.

Like the way you say 'my sim card was stolen' and 'I'm so happy' in the same breath! I finally got a bluetooth phone, but have not been able to get my Mac and the phone to talk to each other. I Think it may be because the phone is a sony ericsson, and sony won't talk to Mac??
If you know, let me in on the secret, then I too can join the back-up revolution...
I'll be flying to NZ in march, will wave to you over the ocean...

when will u get a new SIM card?

Someone Else: sony ericsson's gel well with macs, tats why you see most mac users using them. unless its one of the lesser supported sony ericsson's eg. s700i, which doesn't sport a true symbian OS. anyways, maybe looking up our article might help: http://www.macriot.com/article.php/20050201073709779 if not post your queries at our forum and we'll try to assist!

good one ed. esp. since you haf 2 bluetooth phones!

happy chinese new year dude... better waves and times for you this year...

Posted by: kevin chin at February 9, 2005 03:28 AM

omg you lost your phone in ikea.... before reading another word i've already started commenting. Do you know how much I love Ikea and go there all the time... I love that store and I lost my phone there once too, but the next day I went back and someone had given it to lost in found.

I'm so sorry you lost phone numbers, ya that's how I store phone numbers too... I never thought of how I'd feel losing people's numbers... I'd cry. Okay I'll figure out a secondary way to save the numbers;)

Posted by: Aurora at February 9, 2005 04:19 AM

mel : well what are u waiting for??!

kev : same to you, dude.

aurora : haha! at least we have ONE thing in common! well, moral standards like that are lacking in malaysia because people tend to put themselves first before others. glad you got your phone back.
